Vauxhall Combo (01 - 11)

It was fairly evident in its earlier days that the Vauxhall Combo was based on the popular Corsa, mainly because it practically had the very same front end as it. Vauxhall have since changed their game plan and the Combo is an entirely different beast. It’s now capable of putting up real fight against rivals like the Renault Kangoo and the Citroen Berlingo. Over the years there were other versions added to the range, which really strengthened its reputation. In terms of load capacity, it’s up there with the best in class, boasting around 3.0 cubic metres. The maximum cargo weights can range between 740kg and 843kg depending on what version you opt for, which again is just as good as most of its rivals. One of the best things about the Combo is how good it is to drive. It still maintains the car-like handling of the older models, but with a more refined feel. The steering is sharp and well-weighted, and there’s very little body-roll on corners. There are some excellent, punchy engines available that offer impressive efficiency and economy.

Look out for

•  Make sure all necessary recall work was carried out

What we like

•  It’s a solid and well-built workhorse

•  Decent practicality for a van of its size

•  Pretty easy to drive and manoeuvre

•  Doesn’t cost a fortune to buy or keep on the road

What we don't like

•  The styling may not be to everyone’s taste
